HAIR AND SCALP CARE

THE BASICS OF HAIR CARE

Today’s hectic lifestyle can impact our hair and scalp health by many different factors: lifestyle, work, stress, pollution, poor diet, lack of exercise, following a bad hair care regime by using junk hair cosmetics just to mention a few. By having a healthier scalp, you protect your hair growth.

Many people have problems with their hair simply because they use the wrong products, or they do not wash their hair properly. By not washing your hair correctly, you are likely to run into problems.

The best conditioned hair and scalp is washed once a day with a shampoo suitable for your type of scalp and conditioner suitable for your type of hair.

If you have a hair or a scalp problem, or if you are losing excessive amounts of hair, try this check list:

  • Do you have a well-balanced diet?
  • Are you under stress/traumatic events?
  • Are you dieting or taking medication?
  • Have you got any health problems?
  • Are your hair products suitable for you?
  • Are you going through hormonal changes i.e. puberty, thyroid function, menopause, pregnancy?
  • How about your vitamins and minerals intake?
  • When was the last time you had your blood checked?

Any of the above can cause you to suffer temporary hair loss, but with a little care and right products, your hair should return to normal within six months (hair growth cycle). Should you be suffering from genetic hair loss, you should still follow a good hair care regime and a consult a trichologist.

Remember that the reason causing hair loss (medication, trauma etc.) might have happened even three months prior the hair loss. You can read more of hair loss and hair cycle from here.

THE HEALTHIER THE SCALP, THE BETTER THE HAIR GROWTH!

Always wash your hair with pH balanced shampoos and conditioners. Human hair and scalp oil sebum has a pH balance between 4.5 and 5.5. This natural hair acidity prevents fungi and bacteria in the hair and scalp and keep the cuticle closed and healthy. Some hair products disrupt the natural pH of hair and are very harsh when cleansing the scalp because of the strong ingredients used in certain products.

By washing the scalp only once or twice a week, using a strong and cheap, aggressive detergent must surely be a recipe for scalp problems, particularly: hair loss, seborrhea and varies types of dandruff. The shampoo used must be at least mild enough to use on the skin of the face without damage. If it is too strong the skin of your face, it is certainly too strong for the hair and scalp.
